Keterampilan berbicara (speaking skill) dalam bahasa Inggris merupakan suatu keterampilan seseorang untuk menyampaikan pemikirannya kepada siapa saja melalui lisan. Speaking bagi kebanyakan orang dianggap keterampilan paling sulit karena meliputi banyak aspek dari kemampuan berbahasa Inggris antara lain pronunciation (pengucapan), listening (mendengarkan), grammar (tata bahasa) dan vocabulary (kosakata) sekaligus (Yanto, 2015). Namun sesungguhnya yang diperlukan hanyalah sedikit keberanian dan motivasi yang besar untuk bisa berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan lancar.

UNIT OVERVIEW

Course Title: Describing Stuff and Things

Subject Matter: Describing items

Duration: 90 mins

Grade: 10

Lesson Overview

  • Students will be able to describe things using their existing vocabulary.
  • Students will be able to practice their speaking skills.

  • Use their vocabulary to describe.
  • Describe item that they do not know in English by stating their purpose.
  • Participate in the activity.

Procedures and Activity

1. Tell students that you are going to describe some words and you want them to write down on a piece of paper what you are describing. Read out each of the following descriptions:

a. It is a thing that I use to cut fruits, vegetables and meat. It is long and sharp. It might be dangerous for little kids. This thing is usually located in the kitchen.

b. It is a machine that people use to get around. It has two tires and makes beeping sound if you push a certain button. The person who drives this need to wear a helmet.

c. Thing this is alive. Some of them are tall and some of them are short. Usually the color is green but if it’s located in a country that has four seasons, parts of this thing changes color to orange or brown.


2. Reveal the answers to students.
3. Ask volunteers to re-describe one of the items.
4. Go through the worksheet. Explain what T was doing and get students to fill in the blanks to describe items.
5. Give time for students to go through the worksheet and allow them to work with pairs.

6. Students find a pair to work with and one of the students will start to describe an item being projected on the board. They will have the time to switch.

7. Get students to find a new pair and put two objects on the table.

8. One student will describe one of the items and the other student will try to guess the item. Students take turn to explain in this exercise.



Teaching aids and other resources

In this class teacher will need a projector to show the pictures that students will describe. A worksheet need to be printed for students to work on during class.


Possible Problems

- students might be hesitant to participate

- students might have difficulties to find function words to describe the items

The following hints may help solve the problems:

- project words that might be useful

- allow students to ask questions during the activity



Homework

Student need to find other five things at home and write down the description of those items. One item must be described at least with four sentences. Homework will be due the next week.


Evaluation

Students will be evaluated by homework completion and participation in class.
